DIY Party Decor: Twirlers

Is there an official name for these? I prefer calling them "twirlers" rather than "danglers" or "swirl decorations". They are springy coils of paper you attach to the ceiling that hold a paper image at the bottom. I bought a set last year for my daughter's Olaf/Frozen themed birthday party and they were a cute, easy decoration for only 5.99. Except, paying 6 bucks for pieces of paper...ehhh. And this year, Emmy wanted a Mario Bros party, so decor was harder to find locally. So I decided it should be easy enough to make my own!

Charmander Pokemon Crochet Pattern

These Charmanders are stocking stuffers for a class at a local school who were in need of some cheering. I specifically designed them to be easy to make and easy to give away.

I wanted a quick, cute, and efficient Pokemon pattern. Something that kids would recognize, or if they didn't know Pokemon, would still like. Oddish, Poliwag, Voltorbs, all those round, easier Pokemon were a no-go. I finally settled on Charmander. Even if you didn't know or like Pokemon, he could still be thought of as a dragon or dinosaur. Also, he is DARLING so there.

So after creating NINE of him and tweaking the pattern over and over, here it is! His body and head are connected, saving some time. I did some facial sculpting just by weaving yarn back and forth through his eye sockets, but if you like the straight forward approach you can omit that.

Owl Purse Pattern

Whoooo needs an owl purse free pattern? My daughter likes to wear her purse when going out to just carry random toddler junk. A plastic dinosaur, a used sticker, some rocks, you know, important things to bring to Target every trip.

You can easily crochet a longer strap and make one for yourself as well! I made some really long ones and knotted the extra at the top just in case. Please make sure you don't give these to unsupervised LITTLE little kids, it could be a strangling hazard.

Moving on, these purses are quick to make (about an hour) and turn out pretty fool proof. Accidently did too many rows of one color? Missed an increase? Probably NO ONE will notice! I made the first four purses without writing down the full pattern before I finally sat down and made decisions on when to change colors etc. So you can tweak it to your liking!

Again, I feel like I'm too wordy in my patterns, so please contact me if it doesn't make sense! You can email me at thecraftzilla@gmail.com or message me on Facebook.

Spooky Oooky Crafts for Halloween

It's month long Halloween aka OCTOBER! Halloween is the BEST. There's nothing I love more than to run around with the little ones gathering candy, then bailing at the end of the night with a bowl of white chili and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Disney version!) in the VCR.

So of course, I had to make some DIY decorations!

This past month has been a doozy--family emergencies, traveling, weird work schedules, a daughter who thinks she's a hoover vacuum and must eat everything on the floor-- so I really enjoy those moments when I can craft. But it's hard to make huge projects, so I've completed a few that you can get done pretty quick.

It's a pumpkin coaster! This took about 15 minutes and turned out really cute. You could add more rounds and make it a pot holder, or apply it as is onto a headband, shirt, etc for a pumpkin applique. I had to prove it wasn't useless by using it under my hot apple cider mug.
R: Ohhhh no, I don't want to ruin this table, but I need to set down this steaming hot apple cider~. What should I doooo~
G: *Sigh* Use...your coaster.
R: Wow! Thank goodness I just so happened to make one with my CARING, LOVING, CRAFTY hands.

There's something about tiny decorations--I love them. Easy to make, easy to store, and they just seem so dainty. These guys now reside by my candy bowl at work. I made a bunch of the little pumpkins for my friend who used them to adorn her wreath! (Now if she'll share a photo..or should I go to her house and take a picture of her door and leave? Not creepy at all, right?)

(I didn't use this pattern but it gives the same result.)

(I gave him a ruffly bottom by increasing the stitches at the very end.)

You know how insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? Why do I keep making my daughter hats that she WON'T WEAR?? Luckily, they make great gifts to friends who have babies small enough they can't resist obedient enough to wear them for a two second photo shoot.

The ribbing on them makes them super warm, and the yarn I bought for them (I dub it "Ewok Orange") is soooo soft. (It's Hobby Lobby's "I Love This Yarn, by the way.) I finished a couple hats on a road trip because it is worked in rows and you don't REALLY need a pattern!

Now when my sewing machine gets here Wednesday, I can start on the biiiig Halloween crafts--the Halloween costumes! :)
